WHAT DO THESE SERVICES MEAN

Individual Psychotherapy

Individual psychotherapy is a collaborative, one-on-one treatment process between a trained mental health professional (such as a psychologist, psychiatrist, counselor, or clinical social worker) and a client. Its primary goal is to help individuals understand and address emotional difficulties, behavioral issues, mental health disorders, or life challenges.

Key Components:

  • Personalized Attention: Sessions are tailored to the specific needs, goals, and concerns of the individual.

  • Confidential Environment: The therapeutic setting is private and confidential, promoting open communication.

  • Therapeutic Alliance: A trusting, supportive relationship between therapist and client is central to progress.

  • Evidence-Based Approaches: Techniques may include Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Psychodynamic Therapy, Humanistic Therapy, or other modalities, depending on the client’s needs.

Common Issues Addressed:

  • Anxiety, depression, and mood disorders

  • Trauma and PTSD

  • Grief and loss

  • Relationship difficulties

  • Self-esteem and identity issues

  • Life transitions and stress management

Goals of Individual Psychotherapy:

  • Increase self-awareness and insight

  • Develop healthier thinking and behavior patterns

  • Improve coping mechanisms

  • Enhance emotional regulation

  • Promote personal growth and well-being

Format:

  • Session Duration: Typically 45–60 minutes

  • Frequency: Usually once per week, though this may vary

  • Length of Treatment: Short-term (a few sessions) to long-term (months or years), based on goals and progress

Individual psychotherapy provides a safe space for personal exploration and emotional healing, empowering individuals to make meaningful changes in their lives.

Couples/Marital Psychotherapy

Couples and marital psychotherapy, often called couples therapy or marriage counseling, is a form of psychotherapy designed to help intimate partners improve their relationship, resolve conflicts, and strengthen emotional connection. It involves both partners working collaboratively with a licensed therapist to understand patterns in their relationship and develop healthier ways of interacting.

Key Components:

  • Joint Participation: Both partners attend sessions together, although individual sessions may occasionally be included.

  • Neutral Facilitation: The therapist acts as an impartial guide, helping both partners express themselves and listen to one another effectively.

  • Evidence-Based Techniques: Common approaches include Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT), the Gottman Method, Imago Relationship Therapy, and Cognitive Behavioral Couples Therapy (CBCT).

Common Issues Addressed:

  • Communication problems

  • Conflict resolution

  • Infidelity or breaches of trust

  • Emotional distance or lack of intimacy

  • Sexual difficulties

  • Parenting disagreements

  • Life transitions (e.g., moving, career changes, retirement)

  • Premarital concerns or relationship doubts

Goals of Couples Therapy:

  • Improve communication and active listening

  • Rebuild trust and emotional safety

  • Deepen emotional and physical intimacy

  • Resolve recurring conflicts

  • Clarify values and shared goals

  • Foster empathy, understanding, and mutual respect

Format:

  • Session Duration: Typically 50–90 minutes

  • Frequency: Weekly or biweekly, depending on the couple’s needs

  • Length of Treatment: Varies widely—from short-term intervention (6–12 sessions) to long-term therapy

Couples and marital psychotherapy provides a structured and supportive space for partners to address their struggles, strengthen their bond, and make intentional, healthy choices for their relationship’s future.

Family Psychotherapy

Family psychotherapy, also known as family therapy or systemic therapy, is a form of counseling that involves multiple family members working together with a trained therapist to improve communication, resolve conflicts, and address relational or behavioral issues within the family unit. The therapy focuses on how individual behaviors affect the family as a whole and vice versa.

Key Components:

  • Whole-System Approach: Emphasizes the family as an interconnected system, where changes in one member can influence the entire group.

  • Inclusive Participation: Sessions may include parents, children, siblings, or extended family members, depending on the issue.

  • Therapist Role: The therapist helps facilitate open communication, identify unhelpful patterns, and encourage collaborative problem-solving.

Common Issues Addressed:

  • Parent-child conflicts

  • Sibling rivalry or tension

  • Divorce, separation, or blended family challenges

  • Mental health issues affecting the family (e.g., depression, substance use)

  • Behavioral problems in children or adolescents

  • Grief, trauma, or major life transitions

  • Cultural or intergenerational differences

Goals of Family Therapy:

  • Improve communication and reduce conflict

  • Strengthen family bonds and support systems

  • Increase understanding of each member’s perspective

  • Develop healthier boundaries and roles

  • Address specific behavioral or emotional concerns collectively

Format:

  • Session Duration: Typically 60–90 minutes

  • Frequency: Weekly or biweekly

  • Length of Treatment: Short-term or long-term, depending on the family’s needs and goals

Family psychotherapy creates a safe and structured environment where all voices can be heard, helping families navigate challenges together and build stronger, more resilient relationships.

Group Psychotherapy

Group psychotherapy is a form of therapy in which one or more trained therapists work with a small group of individuals simultaneously. It offers a supportive environment where members can share experiences, gain insight, and learn from one another while working toward personal growth and emotional well-being.

Key Components:

  • Shared Experience: Members often face similar issues (e.g., anxiety, depression, trauma, addiction), which fosters connection and mutual understanding.

  • Therapist Facilitation: The therapist guides discussions, ensures emotional safety, and helps members explore patterns, behaviors, and emotions.

  • Interpersonal Learning: Group dynamics provide opportunities to give and receive feedback, practice social skills, and improve relationships.

Common Issues Addressed:

  • Anxiety and depression

  • Substance use or addiction recovery

  • Trauma and PTSD

  • Grief and loss

  • Relationship or interpersonal difficulties

  • Low self-esteem or identity concerns

  • Social isolation

Goals of Group Therapy:

  • Reduce feelings of isolation

  • Improve communication and interpersonal skills

  • Gain support, insight, and feedback from peers

  • Enhance self-awareness and emotional expression

  • Practice new behaviors in a safe environment

Format:

  • Group Size: Typically 6–12 participants

  • Session Duration: 60–90 minutes

  • Frequency: Weekly, often on a set day and time

  • Types: Can be open (new members can join anytime) or closed (fixed group for a set period)

Group psychotherapy is a powerful therapeutic approach that helps individuals realize they are not alone in their struggles. It fosters healing through connection, empathy, and shared growth.

Birth-5 Assessments

Birth-5 assessments are specialized evaluations designed to understand the emotional, behavioral, developmental, and relational needs of infants, toddlers, and young children (ages 0–5) within the context of their caregiving environments. These assessments help clinicians identify early signs of mental health concerns and guide interventions that support both the child and their family.

Using developmentally sensitive tools and observations, therapists assess areas such as:

  • Attachment and parent-child relationships

  • Emotional regulation and social functioning

  • Cognitive, language, and motor development

  • Behavioral patterns and coping skills

  • Family dynamics and environmental stressors

These assessments often involve caregiver interviews, structured play, direct observation, and the use of standardized tools like the DC:0–5™ Diagnostic Classification and Ages & Stages Questionnaires® (ASQ®).

The goal is to provide an accurate picture of the child’s strengths and needs, and to create a personalized treatment plan that supports healthy development, enhances caregiver relationships, and promotes emotional wellness from the very beginning.

Autism Assessments

Autism assessments are comprehensive evaluations designed to understand whether an individual may meet the criteria for Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) and to better understand their unique strengths, challenges, and support needs. These assessments are developmentally informed and tailored to each individual—whether a young child, adolescent, or adult.

The evaluation process typically includes:

  • Clinical interviews with the individual and/or caregivers

  • Behavioral observations in natural or structured settings

  • Standardized assessment tools, such as the Autism Diagnostic Observation Schedule (ADOS-2) and Autism Diagnostic Interview–Revised (ADI-R)

  • Developmental and psychosocial history reviews

  • Collateral input from teachers, therapists, or other caregivers when appropriate

In psychotherapy settings, autism assessments are integrated with an understanding of emotional and relational dynamics. This approach allows clinicians to differentiate between autism-related behaviors and those related to trauma, anxiety, ADHD, or other developmental or emotional concerns.

The goal is not just diagnosis, but insight—helping clients and families better understand how the brain processes information, emotions, and relationships. Following assessment, therapists provide individualized feedback, treatment recommendations, and support with accessing services like speech therapy, occupational therapy, school accommodations (IEPs/504 plans), and social skills support.

Autism assessments at Anchors Wellness emphasize respect, neurodiversity, and collaboration, ensuring each client feels seen, understood, and supported.
